Ben Symons, author of the Bloomsbury Professional Tax Insight – Cryptocurrency and Blockchain will provide an overview of the taxation of cryptocurrency. The talk will cover what cryptocurrency is, how it is taxed in the UK both directly and indirectly and how the tax treatment can differ depending on an individual’s circumstances. Given the largely unknown nature of cryptocurrency and its increasing use, this is an essential talk for any tax adviser. Topics covered will include:

  • Taxation of cryptocurrency gains and losses – tax-free “gambling” gains, trading income or capital gains / losses?
  • Is cryptocurrency property for capital gains tax purposes?
  • Taxation of hard forks;
  • Airdropped tokens – how are they taxed?
  • Taxation of non-domiciled individuals – inheritance tax and capital gains tax;
